NWFL Premiership Super 6 (3rd Place): Rivers Angels vs Confluence Queens Preview

The third-place match of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six will pit Confluence Queens against 2020/2021 league champions, Rivers Angels.

The meeting will mark the rematch of 2019 final at the Agege Stadium as both sides had the same record at the ongoing Super Six with a win and loss after two games.

Ogbonda Whyte’s side had suffered a 3-1 opening loss to hosts and finalists, Delta Queens but Chukwuamaka Osigwe’s 56th-minute winner against Edo Queens was enough to seal the progression after Moses Aduku’s side were held to a 0-0 draw by Delta Queens.

The exit of the Benin Arsenals confirmed the Lokoja-based side’s place in the final four, with a chance to fight for the three million Naira cash prize for the third-placed team.

On the other hand, Edwin Okon’s side earned a 2-0 win against Robo Queens with goals from Chiamaka Okwuchukwu and Adaobi Okah but faltered 1-0 to Bayelsa Queens as Glory Edet’s penalty ended its quest to reclaim the league title on Friday.

The last meeting between both sides ended in a 1-1 draw in the 2020/21 season, with Glory Edet, who now suits up for Bayelsa opened the scoring for Confluence before Regina Otu who is now with the French’s Saint Etienne level for the Jewel of Rivers.

Rivers Angels hold a five-match unbeaten run before its 1-0 loss to Bayelsa Queens on Friday, while Confluence Queens had enjoyed a nine-match unbeaten streak during the regular season. However, they suffered back-to-back losses against Robo Queens and Delta Queens in their last regular season tie and Super Six opener before ending the bad run of form with a 1-0 win against Edo Queens.

Confluence tactician Ogbonda will also aim to avoid another knockout loss to his former boss at Rivers, Edwin Okon, having lost thrice in three finals, including two Federation Cup and NWFL once.

Confluence will hope to avoid another heartbreak to end their season on a high and claim the coveted third place three million Naira prize as the expense of former champions, Rivers Angels.
