Hosts Delta Queens and holders Bayelsa Queens will lock horns in the final of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State, on Sunday.
Delta Queens will put its 15-match unbeaten run on the line against defending champions Bayelsa Queens in the title-deciding final.
Cruising from an unbeaten regular campaign, Tosan Blankson’s side extended their streak to 14 games with a 3-1 win over Confluence Queens to brighten its title chance in its first game of the Super Six.
Delta further extended to 15 after a goalless draw with Edo Queens which sealed a place in the final to face holders, Bayelsa Queens.
The two teams have met seven times since the 2020/2021 season, with the Asaba-based side has won two of the games, while Bayelsa won once as the other four encounters ended in draws.
Both met twice during the regular season in Group A with Delta Queens picking a 2-1 win over Bayelsa Queens in Yenegoa with Chinaza Agoh’s brace canceling out Chinyere Igboamalu’s goal.
The return leg in Asaba ended in a 1-1, with Mercy Omokwo and Etim Edidiong scored for Delta and Bayelsa respectively.
It’s noteworthy that the last defeat suffered by hosts Delta Queens came against Bayelsa Queens at previous Super Six in Benin City.
On-loan Gift Monday inspired the Prosperity Girls to a 1-0 win over Delta at the 2021/2022 NWFL Premiership Super Six.
Since then, Delta Queens has won nine league games with six draws to set a 15-match unbeaten run and they will hope to extend the feat to seal the league diadem on their home ground.
However, defending champions Bayelsa Queens will be keen to put on display their huge experience as the WAFU-B Zonal Qualifiers title holders and 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League bronze winner to retain their Nigerian title for the first time in over a decade.
