2023 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership champions, Delta Queens commenced their West African Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League Qualifiers with a 3-0 win against Burkina Faso league winners, USFA on Sunday.
Making their maiden appearance at the tournament, Tosan Blankson’s side showed class against a team that has made it to every edition of the competition.
With the first chance of the encounter, Alaba Olabiyi opened the scoring for the Nigerian side in the first minute of play and they held onto the lead heading into the dressing room at halftime.
After the interval, NWFL Premiership’s most valuable player, Chinaza Agoh doubled the lead for the Asaba-based side in the 61st minute.
The league’s top goal scorer at the end of the 2022/2023 season, Mercy Omokwo increased the lead to three in the 78th minute.
The win brightened Delta Queens’ resolve to make it out of the group and ultimately win the title. Winning the title will make Blankson’s tutored side the third Nigerian side to qualify for the CAF Women’s Champions League following the footsteps of Rivers Angels (2021) and Bayelsa Queens (2022).
Up next for the Nigeria league winners is a clash with Benin Republic side, Sam Nelly.
