NWFL Premiership MD 10 Preview: Edo, Rivers rekindle South-South derby as Nasarawa seek to unseat Heartland

After three weeks of league postponement, the 2023/2024 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership Matchday 10 take centre stage at eight venues across the country on Wednesday.

16 teams continue to either jostle for Super Six tickets or maintain their league status in the last five games of the current NWFL Premiership season starting with Matchday 10 games.

Naija Ratels vs Dannaz Ladies
(Aguiyi Ironsi Stadium, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja)
Bankole Olowookere’s side welcome newcomers Dannaz Ladies to Abuja in repeat fixture of Matchday two game between both sides.
A brace from Delight Isaac ensured that the new Lagos girls secured a 2-0 win in the earlier and first ever topflight fixture.
Naija Ratels will hope to end their consecutive losses to Confluence Queens and Nasarawa Amazons with both losses away. With four wins under their belt in their debut season, Dannaz Ladies are in pole position to qualify for the Super Six and a result in Abuja will help their resolve.

Confluence Queens vs Adamawa Queens (Iyamho Stadium, Auchi)
In search of consecutive qualification for the season-ending Super Six, Confluence Queens host Adamawa Queens in Auchi.
Mary Mamudu scored the winning goal in favour of Sabo Okala’s side in the reverse fixture.
A win for the host will complete a double over the visitors.
Adamawa Queens have won two of the last four head-to-head games involving both sides with Confluence getting a win and the other game ending in a draw.
The two head-to-head victories for Adamawa Queens came at home which put this game in a keenly contest.

Abia Angels vs Royal Queens (Enyimba International Stadium, Aba)
Another team hoping to complete a double over their opponents is Abia Angels.
They trade tackles with Royal Queens in a bid to inflict another loss on the relegation threatened side.
The reverse fixture in Warri saw Charity Isaiah’s 45th-minute goal winning the game for the visitors.
That was Abia Angels’ first win over their opponents in the last three head-to-head meetings.
The travelers will hope to improve on their paltry two wins from nine games.

Heartland Queens vs Nasarawa Amazons (Dan Anyiam Stadium)
One of the matches to look out for in the matchday as the top two teams in Group A face off.
Nasarawa Amazons top the log ahead of this game after winning the reverse fixture 1-0 thanks to Bibiana Odoh’s goal.
Nasarawa Amazons have won their last two games while are unbeaten with a win and a draw in the same time frame.
A win for either side will help their quest to qualify for the Super Six.
Obi Ogbala is confident of returning to the summit after this game.

Remo Stars Ladies vs Delta Queens

With defeats in their last two games, Remo Stars will attempt to end their consecutive run of form when they welcome holders, Delta Queens to Ikenne.
Arubo Oluwaseyi canceled out Alaba Olayemi’s goal for Delta Queens in the reverse fixture in Asaba.
This will be the second league encounter between both sides awaiting the first win of the encounter.
The goal for Wemimo Matthew’s side is to beat the drop in their debut season.
For Tosan Blankson, a return to the Supr Six win the hope of retaining the title is their prime objective and a win here will do them a real good.

Ekiti Queens vs Bayelsa Queens (Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado Ekiti)
Debutant, Ekiti Queens resolve to maintain their league status will face a huge test when former champions, Bayelsa Queens visit Ado Ekiti.
The reverse fixtures in Yenegoa ended 2-0 in favour of the Prosperity Girls thanks to goals from Shakirat Moshood and Blessing Illievida.
Bayelsa Queens will hope to join Dannaz Ladies, Abia Angels, Nasarawa Amazons, and possibly Rivers Angels in securing a double over their matchday ten opponents.
This is the second league meeting between both sides with contrasting fortunes.
Bayelsa Queens’ only loss of the campaign was against FC Robo Queens in Lagos.
Ekiti Queens on the other hand have lost five games with just two wins so far.

Sunshine Queens vs FC Robo Queens (Akure Township Stadium)
Southwest derby will see FC Robo Queens visit Akure to face Sunshine Queens.
The reverse fixture was a thrilling five-goal win for the Lagos Landladies on Matchday Three.
Folashade Ijamilusi, Favour Nkwocha, and Esther Onyenezide who has moved to Spain scored for Emmanuel Osahon’s side.
Bolaji Olamide and Bunmi Adenuga converted for the Akure-based side in an entertaining contest at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
FC Robo Queens has won three of the last four head-to-head encounters since 2021 with Sunshine Queens’ lone win being a 2-1 victory in Akure on January 12, 2022.

Edo Queens vs Rivers Angels (Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City)
Edo Queens welcome Rivers Angels in a South-South derby in Benin City with huge scores to settle.
The Jewels of Rivers inflicted Moses Aduku’s side with their first loss of the campaign. A 3-1 win courtesy of Motunrayo Ezekiel’s brace and a goal from Chiamaka Okwuchukwu ensured that Suliat Abideen’s strike posed little threat.
The host has not won any of their last three head-to-head games since 2022 with the Port Harcourt-based side winning two of those games.
The last stalemate between both sides took place on December 23, 2020, as Elizabeth Zirike canceled out Vivian Ikechukwu’s opener for Rivers Angels in Benin City.
