Rivers Angels’ head coach Ogbonda Whyte has set his sights on clinching a record-equalling title feat on the final matchday of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six in Nembe, Bayelsa State on Sunday.
The Jewel of Rivers, who last secured the title in the 2020/2021 season under former coach Edwin Okon, are determined to replicate that success against Heartland Queens on Sunday afternoon.
Whyte, who was at the helm of Confluence Queens last season, emphasized the team’s focus and determination to return to Port Harcourt with the trophy, while praised their resilience and ability to secure the much-needed points against the Lokoja-based outfit.
“Our mindset ahead of the last game is to make sure that we get the three points at stake because our mind is made up that Rivers Angels is going home with this trophy,” Whyte told theNWFL.com.
“Before we came into this game, we knew the situation we were in was very difficult for us and decided to fight like a final because if anything goes wrong today, that will be the end of Rivers Angels.
“The first 45 minutes wasn’t an easy game for us because my girls were anxious and wanted to score by all means. In that process, they ended up making lots of mistakes. At the end of the day, we were able to rescue the three points.”
Rivers Angels, aiming for their record-equalling eighth league title, hope to secure victory against debutants from Owerri in Nembe, Bayelsa State, solidifying their place as a dominant force in Nigeria.
