2024/25 NWFL Premiership MD7 Previews: Teams Aim to End First Stanza on a High

As the 2024/25 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership reaches its mid-season juncture, teams are gearing up for crucial Matchday 7 encounters before heading into the brea

With Bayelsa Queens, Rivers Angels, Remo Stars Ladies, and holders Edo Queens still unbeaten, the stakes are higher than ever, setting the stage for an intense round of fixtures across Groups A and B.

Group A

Edo Queens vs. Ekiti Queens

Defending champions Edo Queens will look to maintain their unbeaten run when they host Ekiti Queens at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

Moses Aduku’s side bounced back from consecutive draws with a 2-0 win over Confluence Queens last week. With four wins and two draws, they have been formidable at home, winning two of three matches and only dropping points against Group A leaders Remo Stars Ladies.

Ekiti Queens, however, have struggled on the road, losing all three away games this season. Jacob Vandhi’s side will hope to break that trend against the reigning champions. Last season, both sides won their respective home ties, with Edo Queens securing a 3-1 victory while Ekiti edged them 1-0 in Ado-Ekiti.

Heartland Queens vs. Confluence Queens

Two of the Premiership’s winless teams go head-to-head at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in search of a breakthrough victory.

Heartland Queens have endured a tough start, suffering four losses and managing only two draws—both at home. Meanwhile, Confluence Queens have had an even more difficult campaign, losing all six matches and sharing the league’s worst record with debutants Benue Queens.

Both teams were Super Six playoff contenders last season, making their struggles this term even more surprising. This fixture presents a golden opportunity for one of them to turn their season around.

Remo Stars Ladies vs. Nasarawa Amazons

In a historic first-ever top-flight clash, Remo Stars Ladies face Nasarawa Amazons with Super Six playoff ambitions on the line.

Wemimo Matthew’s side has been the revelation of the season, winning five of their six games—making them the most in-form team across both groups. Their strong start builds on last season’s successes, where they won the Ogun State FA Cup back-to-back, reached the President Federation Cup semi-finals, and lifted the Sheroes Cup.

Remo Stars have won all three of their home matches this season and will look to extend that streak. Nasarawa Amazons, however, bring experience and resilience to the contest, having won four of their six games, including a solid away victory over Confluence Queens.

Dannaz Ladies vs. Abia Angels

Dannaz Ladies will aim to bounce back from last week’s home loss to Remo Stars Ladies when they take on Abia Angels in Lagos.

The Cedars have endured a mixed campaign, registering one win, two draws, and three losses in six outings. Abia Angels, on the other hand, have fared better with three wins, a draw, and two defeats.

Last season, both sides won their respective home encounters, with Dannaz securing a narrow 1-0 victory in Lagos before falling 3-1 in Abia. This will be their third league meeting in two seasons.

Group B

Rivers Angels vs. Adamawa Queens

Unbeaten Rivers Angels welcome Adamawa Queens to Port Harcourt as they look to maintain their impressive form at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

The Jewels of Rivers have won four of their six matches, drawing the other two. Last weekend, they showcased their attacking firepower with a resounding 10-0 win over Sporting Angels in the Rivers State FA Cup final.

Adamawa Queens, known as Fintiri Queens, have struggled away from home, losing all three of their travels this season. They will need a spirited performance to take anything from this tough fixture.

Naija Ratels vs. Benue Queens

Naija Ratels will look to bounce back from their first defeat of the season against Bayelsa Queens when they host Benue Queens in Abuja.

The “One Day At A Time” team has been a tough side to beat, drawing four of their six games while securing one win. With the added momentum of retaining the FCT FA Cup title last weekend, they will be eager to secure their second league victory.

Benue Queens, meanwhile, have endured a nightmare debut season, losing all six of their matches. They will hope to register their first league points against a side that was once owned by their former proprietor before being taken over by the Benue State Government.

FC Robo Queens vs. Bayelsa Queens

FC Robo Queens will face an uphill battle against an unbeaten Bayelsa Queens side when they clash in Lagos.

The Lagos Landladies suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Delta Queens last week, marking their second loss of the season. That setback was followed by a penalty shootout exit in the Lagos FA Cup semi-finals against Unifications Ladies.

Bayelsa Queens, on the other hand, have been a dominant force, winning four and drawing two of their six matches—matching the record of joint Group B leaders Rivers Angels. However, their head-to-head record against Robo Queens is poor, with four losses in their last seven league meetings.

Delta Queens vs. Ibom Angels

Delta Queens will look to build on last week’s emphatic 4-1 victory over FC Robo Queens as they host Ibom Angels at the Stephen Keshi Stadium.

Peter Dedevbo’s team has had a slow start to the season, managing only two wins alongside three losses and a draw. However, their recent form—coupled with retaining the Delta FA Cup last weekend—suggests they may be turning a corner.

Ibom Angels also recorded their second win of the season last week, defeating Adamawa Queens 3-1 in Uyo. The last time these two sides met in the league was during the 2020/21 season, with Delta Queens securing a narrow 1-0 victory at the same venue.

Mid-Season Break and Transfer Window

Following Matchday 7, teams will head into a mid-season break, providing clubs an opportunity to reassess their squads and make ke reinforcements during the transfer window.

With the battle for Super Six qualification heating up, the second half of the season promises to be even more competitive.
