Janet Akekeromowei named NWFL Premiership MVP in debut season

Janet Akekeromowei of Nasarawa Amazons has been named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2024/25 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership season—an extraordinary feat in her first professional campaign.

The 17-year-old forward joined the Amazons at the start of the season from the Asisat Oshoala Academy and quickly established herself as a standout performer.

She finished the season as the league’s second-highest scorer, netting 13 goals in 19 matches.

Nine of those goals came during the regular season, where she helped Nasarawa Amazons secure third place in Group A and a spot in the Super Six Playoffs.

In the championship round, Akekeromowei scored four goals in five matches—the highest tally in the Playoffs.

Her consistent performances were key to the Amazons’ second-place finish, just one point behind champions Bayelsa Queens.

Despite the team narrowly missing out on the title, Akekeromowei’s individual brilliance earned her the league’s top honour.

Her remarkable rise from a youth prospect at the Asisat Oshoala Academy to MVP in her debut professional season marks her as one of the most exciting young talents in Nigerian women’s football.
