As the countdown begins to the 2025 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Championship in Abia State, Victor Damilola Agbagu, Chairman and Director of Operations of Chosen Generation Angels FC, has expressed confidence in the team’s preparations and ambitions for the new season.
The Ogun State-based side played their debut campaign in the NWFL second tier when Cross River State hosted the league in 2024.
Agbagu noted that the build-up to the 2025 Championship has been thorough, with the club making progress both on and off the pitch.
The preparation for the Championship is going smoothly. From player recruitment, coaches’ education upgrades, tactical development, to psychological readiness, the process has been wonderful,” he told thenwfl.com.
“Playing in tune-up tournaments like the WAFA League, State League, and Wasimi Championship has exposed our lapses, which we have worked on. The team is now rearing to go, and the management has put everything in place for our participation in Abia State.”
Reflecting on the team’s objectives, Agbagu stressed that while promotion remains a goal, the immediate focus is on consistent performance.
“What is paramount to us this season is to compete favourably with other teams. Promotion is also on our mind, but improving on our performance from last season is key. We don’t want to be fighting relegation again.”
Replacing star striker Victoria Collins, now on a full scholarship at Cumberland University in the United States of America (USA), remains a challenge, but Agbagu expressed confidence in the new recruits.
“Victoria was excellent for us, but our new players are ready to deliver. We know the economy makes things tough for privately owned clubs, but we are overcoming this with strategic partnerships, stronger media branding, and increased visibility. The NWFL and NFF boards are also doing their best to improve conditions for everyone.”
Agbagu emphasized that the club’s philosophy remains firmly rooted in player development.
“Our major focus is developing excellent female footballers. Recruitment this season was based on our areas of need, while we also retained the bulk of our squad for cohesiveness. The new players are adapting well to the team culture of Chosen Generation Angels FC.”
After finishing bottom of Group B1 with just a point last season, Chosen Generation Angels escaped relegation thanks to Kafayat Anifowoshe’s winner against Kaduna Queens in the playoffs.
Drawing from lessons of the past campaign, Agbagu believes the team is now better equipped.
“Experience is the best teacher. The exposure gathered last season has shaped our preparation this year. With good structures, quality training programmes, proper welfare, motivation, and rewards, we are confident of a stronger performance. It is my hope that our efforts will reflect in results on the pitch.”
The Angels will once again compete in Group B1, where they will battle Pelican Stars, Ahudiyannem Queens, and Wazbak International FC for a promotion ticket when the 2025 NWFL Championship kicks off in Abia State.
