The most anticipated Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL) flagged off its new season on Wednesday across six match centres in the country, with 13 goals scored in five of the six games played.
In Group A, it’s a dream start for newcomers Naija Ratels who welcomed Osun Babes to a 2-0 at the the Area 10 Sports Complex, Abuja. Having been promoted from the second division with a fantastic record, they recorded their first ever top flight win against the ‘Omoluabi Queens’.
The hard fought game ended goalless at halftime but Adugbe Olamide broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute to give the hosts the advantage before Agama Ziperekefhege doubled the lead to sealed the win in the 78th minute.
Rivers Angels began their title defence with a stalemate draw. Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, welcomed the season’s curtain raiser.
The match of day was the clash between long-term rivals, the defending champions, Rivers Angels and Delta Queens. After failing to get past the group stages of the inaugural edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League, many expected The Jewel of Rivers to vet their angers on Delta Queens.
Rivers Angels will next face another stronghold in the league, FC Robo Queens of Lagos in Port Harcourt on December 15, 2021.
Confluence Queens recorded the biggest scoreline of the evening as they spanked Pelican Stars 4-0.
Winifred Eiyebhora scored the fastest goals she opened the scoring in the first minute of the game. Mercy Omokwu doubled in lead in the 21st minute before extending the hosts lead in the 36th minute as the Queens’ took a 3-0 advantage at halftime. Mercy continued from where she stopped at halftime as she added another with six minutes left on the regular time, becoming the first player to registered hat-trick this season.
2021 AITEO Cup Champions, Bayelsa Queens FC with a fearless display in Akure where they thrashed the home side, Sunshine Queens 3-0, with all goals coming in the first half.
Sunday Juliet scored the opener just two minutes into the game before Anjor Mary netted a brace (41, 44) in three minutes as Bayelsa took the first half advantage and sealed the victory.
FC Robo Queens continued from where they stopped last season as they beat Abia Angels 2-0, at the Legacy Football Pitch, National Stadium, Lagos. The ‘Lagos Landladies’ have a good record against their visitors from Aba.
Oke Maria headed home the opener in the 21st minute. Folashade Ijamilusi converted the first penalty kick of the NWFL season to doubled the lead for the hosts in the 38th minute.
Newly promoted, Adamawa Queens will have to go back to the drawing board after losing 0-2 at home to Edo Queens. Thanks to goals from Chioma Olise (16) and Emem Essien (57).
