2025 NWFL Championship MD2 Wrap: Sunshine Queens Secure Premiership Return, Imo Striker and Castmog Stay on Course

Sunshine Queens have sealed their instant return to the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership after edging Unification FC 1–0 in Umuahia on Monday.

A 79th-minute header from Lucky Victory proved the difference, sending the Akure side back to the top flight at the first attempt.

Later in the day, Fortress Ladies played out a goalless draw with Kwara Ladies, a result that mathematically guaranteed Sunshine Queens top spot in Group A2 with six points and a game to spare.

In Group A1, Castmog Ladies maintained their perfect start with a narrow 1–0 win over Royal Queens, courtesy of Zainab Odueke’s late strike. The Ogun State outfit now lead the group with six points from two matches.

But their promotion push remains finely poised. First Mahi Babes reignited their chances with a 1–0 victory against Gallant Queens, after Chidera Okechukwu punished goalkeeper Mutiyat Badmus’ error in the 61st minute.

The final round of fixtures, First Mahi vs Royal Queens and Castmog vs Gallant, will ultimately decide who joins Sunshine Queens in the Premiership.

In Abiriba, Imo Striker Queens tightened their grip on Group B2 with a 2–1 win over Osun Babes.

Goals from Chiamaka Damian and Precious Alex gave them a cushion before Omolola Asha reduced the deficit just before halftime. Imo Striker now top the group with six points from two outings.

Elsewhere in the group, Ghetto Tigers Ladies staged a dramatic comeback to beat Delta Babes 2–1. Playing hours after the sudden passing of their head coach, Gibbor Alfred Poto, Delta struck first through Nancy Ayeta, but second-half goals from Rofiat Ewetade and Ebube Jude lifted the Tigers to second place on four points.

In Group B1, Wazbak Queens went top after holding Pelican Stars to a 1–1 draw. Joy Irobi had put the Stars ahead before Abibat Adediran struck the equaliser.

The standings could change on Tuesday, however, as Ahudiyannem Queens, currently on three points, will reclaim top spot if they win their postponed fixture against Chosen Generation Angels.
